Well, we’ve been living out in the boonies for about 5 years now, and we’ve finally had our first REAL problem with a snake.  We’ve seen snakes around here, and we had a dead one in our front yard before, but this one was strolling through our backyard and the dogs were ready to pounce.

I noticed the dogs staring intently out our bedroom windows and they were starting to go bonkers.  Usually they do this when there’s rabbits out back, which is pretty much nightly.  So, at first I didn’t think anything of it.  But then I decided to have a look at the rabbits myself, only I didn’t see any rabbits.  As my eyes scanned the yard I noticed this strange line in the grass.  “What is that?” I thought.  Then I saw it move!

I had Sonya lock the dogs in and grab me a flashlight so that I could go and check it out.  I was hoping that it was just a harmless gopher snake that I could handle.  Unfortunately it was a diamondback rattlesnake, so I decided to “handle it.”  Yes, I could have called someone out to remove it without harming it, but this guy was on the move, and I didn’t want him getting into the bushes or next door before someone could get out here.

Turns out the JohnstonCentral Webcam caught the whole thing.  Here it is if you want to see it.  It was dark, so, sorry about the quality.  WARNING: This video is not for the squeamish or for PETA members.  I don’t want to hear any whining!
